Now that you
know what to get a guy I’m going to go deeper into their mindset. Have you ever
gotten a gift from someone that you really didn’t like but you smile anyways?
Well, this happens to guys when it comes to books. People don’t know what to
get them so they get the books they have heard about. Sometimes this is okay
(like with Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc.) but sometimes they get books that
they would rather die than read.
To make sure that you know what books they
want you have to think like a guy. Guys have a few criteria for their books. A
good story that is fast paced and unique. A bit of action or something that
interests them, like sports or video games. A macho main character. And a cool
cover. Guys are as shallow as you think, but only with books. To help you
understand what I am talking about I will break it down.
Guys don’t want to read the same
book with different characters. Unless it’s set in the same world, guys hate
re-reading most books so something playing off of a general idea is boring.
They also don’t want to hear a ton of dialogue and back story as much as epic
scenes. Obviously some guys are different, like I love back story and an
explanation to everything. It needs to have some aspect that interests them. I
would never read a book that is like real life. I read to escape from the
boring and stress filled lives we live. Why would I want to read a book about
something I already do. To me it’s like going to school and taking the same
class over and over and over (and over and over). The macho main character is
very important. These guys are confident and have a lot of power. Harry Potter
might be a nerd but he has a stick that could turn people into mice. That’s
pretty cool.
Guys love thinking about how they would do all the crazy stuff the
main character did but better, even though we would probably scream like a
little girl. A cool cover sells it for a guy. We are very shallow. If we do not
know the series or author we will not pick up a book with a boring cover. If it
has something that we don’t care for on the cover then we won’t try. So there
you have it. Everything a guy looks for in a book. See you in two thursdays and
hope enjoyed the post.
Question of
the week: What do you look for in a book and what books cover your criteria?
And just to make this more awesome, if you comment on today's post you'll be entered into a random drawing to win a copy of teamTEENauthor member, Adam Leonard's, book Rift Riders.
Winner will be announced on the blog this Sunday!

Jackson buddy I could not agree with you more, I am sooooooo picky on what I read. I stick with my main author rick riordan. I rarely ever trail off. If the cover looks awesome and the synopsis sounds amazing I am soooo in my friend, for example tempest (insane book).
ReplyDeleteSame! Guys can be so hard to buy a book for! I think the cover is most important to grab a guys attention and the story should not be to lovey dovey
ReplyDeleteMy husband is not a big reader ...he has read the ufc fighter Matt hughes' autobiography and that's About it! I love reading all kinds of books so I don't put to much thought into the cover I do however read the intros on the cover flaps or on the back of the book and that usually helps me decide if I want to read the book!
